12.

“Where next?” I said, trying to look eager.

“Up there,” Aunty Iris said, peering up into the source of the soft light on this shore of the lake. “We can go above ground again.”

We all peered up and, right above us, there was a disc of bright green daylight. It seemed to be a window, at the top of the walls around us.

We all drew in a breath.

“That’s the Shrieking Jungle up there...” I said, quietly.

And, if you listened carefully, you could indeed hear a distant shrieking, far above.

We glanced searchingly at the walls of the cavern for a way up into the world above. You could see that the walls had been carved into, perhaps centuries ago, and they were decorated with all kinds of intricate statues.

There was also a network of staircases leading up to the window at the top. It was tangled in vines and seemed fairly easy for climbing.

“Maybe our luck’s in,” Aunty Iris grunted, leading the way. Then she paused to pull a lobster out of her cardigan pocket. “We’ll get to the top, strike up a camp, and eat this fella for lunch.”

She grinned and waved the startled, blinded lobster in our faces.

Sometimes there was something very discomfiting about Aunty Iris and the almost heartless way she went on.

So, the next thing was, we went clambering up more steps. These were mildewed blue and green. It was like climbing up a very soft, old cheese. As we went we paused now and then to examine the carvings in the rock walls.

“These are ancient,” Aunty Iris mused. “I wonder who did them.”

I was hauling myself up on the slimy vines, past a row of fierce-looking statues. They had vicious pointed teeth and very long hair. Or fur. Whichever, it was all over their bodies and their extra long arms and legs.

“I don’t like the looks of these fellas,” Aunty Iris said, patting one on the head. “Sloths. Horrible things! No manners! Lice! Bad breath! I hope we don’t meet any of them!”

Somehow her jauntiness didn’t inspire much confidence.
